Congratulations to fencers for their performance at the Cadet-Junior World Championships  March 23-30 Linz Austria


2005 Coach of the Year Award
Ed Korfanty was presented with Coach of the Year Award in Las Vegas by the US Fencing Coaches' Association.  This is the first national recognition Korfanty has received for the outstanding results from his students which far surpass any other club in the USA. OFA has more World Champion titles than any other club in the US (9) and has done it all in one weapon!


World Cup Success
Our successes continue! OFA places three of our club fencers (Thompson, Ward, Zagunis) in the top 8 final of a senior "A" grade World Cup FOR THE SECOND TIME! OFA made fencing history being the first time  that a single club has placed three of its members in the top 8 of a senior world cup; and now we have done it for a second time at the July Vancouver World Cup. Congratulations fencers Zagunis, Thompson, Ward and Head Coach Korfanty!


2005 US National Senior Team

Congratulations to OFA member's Mariel Zagunis (2004 Olympic champion), Rebecca Ward (2005 Jr. World Champion) and Caitlin Thompson (2004 Cadet World Champion) for earning their place on the 4 member US National Senior Team. The team will represent the United States at the 2005 World Championships in Leipzeig, Germany October 8-15.


2005 US National Veteran's Team
OFA members Sherry Green and Ed Korfanty both win places on the USA Veteran's team. They will represent the USA at the 2005 Veteran's World Championships Sept. 2-4 in Tampa Florida. Congratulations to both!



 
2005 NCAA Fencing Championship

Three OFA members helped propel Notre Dame to win the 2005 NCAA Fencing Championship.  Outstanding efforts by Valerie Providenza, Mariel Zagunis, and Patrick Ghattas helped Notre Dame achieve a narrow victory over rival Ohio State.

Patrick's 18-5 win/loss results during the tournament helped him win a Silver medal.

With a 21-2 win/loss record, Mariel's strong performance propelled her to a Silver medal.

After an overnight hospital stay for food poisoning, Valerie turned in a remarkable 19-4 win/loss performance and finished 4th place.



Congratulations to OFA's college students that qualified for the NCAA fencing finals in Houston, TX.

2005 US National Cadet and Jr. Team
Congratulations to OFA's  2005 US National Team members who will compete in Linz, Austria March 23-30, 2005 at the Cadet/Junior World Championships!

Mariel Zagunis: 2004 Olympic GOLD medalist will compete in the Junior Women's Sabre March 26th. She will also be part of the USA Junior Team competing on March 29th. This is Mariel's 8th National Team. Mariel is currently a freshman at the University of Notre Dame

Rebecca Ward: Will compete in both the Cadet and junior individual events as well as the team event. This is Becca's second year on the US National Team. She is ranked # 1 in the US in Cadet (under age 17) Women's Sabre. She is also expected to receive the FIE World Cup award this year for being the highest ranked fencer on the international standings for the season.

Mera Keltner: This is Mera's first US National Team appearance. She will compete in the Cadet Women's Sabre on March 23rd. Mera is a junior at Jesuit High School. Her best result of the season was a Silver medal at the Cadet World Cup circuit event in Konin, Poland in September 2004.

Caitlin Thompson: The 2004 Cadet World Champion, will compete for the US in the junior team event on March 26th. Caity has made several Junior World Cup finals this season including the Silver medal in Budapest and most recently a Bronze medal at the Senior World Cup in Bangkok.

Patrick Ghattas: This is Pat's third National Team. His best result is the Silver medal in the Junior team at the 2003 World Championships. Patrick also earned a Bronze medal in Sosnowiec, Poland Junior World Cup in October. He is a Sophomore at the University of Notre Dame.

Ed Korfanty: OFA head Coach and US National Team Coach for Women's Sabre, Mr Korfanty is the designated women's coach for these World Championships. Mr. Korfanty has coached the Oregon Fencing Alliance for more than 11 years and has successfuly had at least one student every year on the US National Team. This is the first time OFA has placed 5 fencers on the US National team. Mr Korfanty's students have won more World Champion titles than any other club in the US.



Bill Hayward Amateur Athlete of the Year
Mariel Zagunis has been presented with the Bill Hayward Amateur Athlete of the Year award.



NCAA Women's Sabre Champion
Fencing for University of Notre Dame, Valerie Providenza  won the 2004 NCAA Women's Sabre Championship.

Mariel Zagunis - 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist, Women's Sabre

Mariel Zagunis won the first Olympic women’s saber competition Tuesday night, beating former world champion Tan Xue of China 15-9.  This is the first
ever Olympic Gold Medal for USA women's fencing.

Congratulations to Mariel Zagunis and her coach, Ed Korfanty,  for her beautiful victory at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.


2003 Coach of the Year
Ed Korfanty has been named USFA Coach of the Year for  2003. This is the second time Coach Korfanty has earned this recognition.
