- Feb. 3, 2007: Mariel Zagunis takes the GOLD medal at the London,
England World Cup, with Clubmate Rebecca Ward bringing home the SILVER.
- Nov. 2006: Congratulations to Avery Zuck, Sarah Borrmann, and Eileen
Hassett who have accepted athletic scholarships from Notre Dame. They
will enter in 2007. OFA delighted and proud that these fencers have
received significant financial support to the college of their choice.

- Oct. 2, 2006: USA Sweeps Women's sabre medals at the 2006 World
Championships in Torino Italy. Rebecca Ward wins the Gold, becoming
individual World Champion at the tender age of 16. Becca now holds the
Cadet, Jr. and Sr. Women's World Champion titles. Way to go Becca!
Mariel Zagunis wins the silver, Sada Jacobson (Atlanta) takes the

- Sept. 1, 2006: Ed Korfanty wins the gold at the Veteran's World
Championships, making this his 3rd World Champion title in Men's sabre.
- Aug. 26, 2006: Holly Moore wins the gold at the Pan American Fencing
Championships in Cadet Women's sabre. Way to go Holly!
- USA Today.com named Mariel Olympic Athlete of
the Week for the second time on June 20, 2006 for her consistent
performance, and her June Las Vegas World Cup gold medal win.

- June 30: Congratulations to Sage Palmedo for winning the silver
medal in Y10 Women's sabre at the Summer Nationals in Georgia, and Sarah
Borrmann for her silver medal at the same event.!!
- June 25: Mariel Zagunis wins the 2005-2006 World Cup Trophy, ending
the season as the fencer with the best over-all results of the season.
She will be presented with a special FIE (Federation International
Escrime) medal during a presentation ceremony at the 2006 Turin Italy
World Championships. Rebecca Ward finishes in 8th place.

- June 16-17, 2006: Las Vegas USA: Mariel Zagunis wins the Individual
gold at the Grand Prix in the toughest field of competitors yet. Team
USA consisting of Mariel, Becca Ward, Caity Thompson and Sada Jacobson
win the Team Gold. Eileen Hasset continues her strong performance and

- June 9-10, 2006: Vancouver Canada: Rebecca Ward wins her 2nd Sr.
World Cup Gold medal in a strong field of competitors. Teammate Mariel
Zagunis brings home the bronze. In a stunning upset our own Eileen
Hassett, in her very first Sr. World Cup event, defeats and eliminates
from the competition the current World Champion, Anne-Lise Touya in the
round of 32, the narrowly misses making the round of eight losing to
Britian's Louise Bond-Williams 15-14. All of OFA's entries make the top

- June 3-4, Klagenfurt Austria: Rebecca Ward wins her first Sr. World
Cup Gold Medal and the USA sweeps the medals with Becca taking the gold,
Sada Jacobson the silver and Mariel Zagunis the bronze. Caity Thompson
finishes #8, her first top 8 placing at a Sr. World Cup. Way to go
ladies!!

Congratulations to Rebecca Ward, 2006 Cadet World Champion, 2006 Jr. World
Champion, and Jr. Team World Champion. Becca brought home 3 gold medals from
the Cadet and Jr. World Championships in Korea - April 2006.
In the Cadet semi finals Becca
defeated Jackie Jacobson and then met Caroline Vloka for the final.
Becca sealed her victory by one touch, winning 15-14. This is the
first time in US Fencing history that the US has swept a World
Championship (held in Korea) event, taking Gold, Silver and Bronze.

In the Jr. Finals Becca
crushed Russian Ekaterina Diatchenko 15-5 to make it to the gold medal
bout. Then beat Germany's Alexandra Bujdoso 15-11 to win the Jr. World
Champion title.

- April 7, 2006: FIE Congress announces final decision: Women's Team Sabre
will be added to the 2008 Beijing Olympics! The USA are the 2005 World
Champions in the Women's Team event. 3 of the 4 team members come from the
Oregon Fencing Alliance.
- March 17, 2006 - Mariel Zagunis wins NCAA champion title in Women's sabre
for Notre Dame.
- March 10-13 Reno NAC nets OFA 4 medals, Howard Huang -Silver in Div.2,
Alfredo Rivera #8 In Div.3, Kimberly Klein-Braddock - Bronze in Women's
Veterans +40 sabre, and Sherry Green Bronze in Women's +60. Excellent results

Coach of the Year Award
Ed Korfanty was presented with Coach of the Year Award in Las Vegas by
the US Fencing Coaches' Association. This is the first national
recognition Korfanty has received for the outstanding results from his
students which far surpass any other club in the USA. OFA has more
World Champion titles than any other club in the US (9) and has done it
all in one weapon!
World
Cup Success
Our successes continue! OFA places three of our club fencers (Thompson,
Ward, Zagunis) in the top 8 final of a senior "A" grade World Cup FOR THE SECOND
TIME! OFA made fencing history being the first time that a single club has
placed three of its members in the top 8 of a senior world cup; and now we have
done it for a second time at the July Vancouver World Cup. Congratulations fencers
Zagunis, Thompson, Ward and Head Coach Korfanty!
2005 US National
Senior Team
Congratulations to OFA member's Mariel Zagunis (2004 Olympic
champion), Rebecca Ward (2005 Jr. World Champion) and Caitlin Thompson (2004
Cadet World Champion) for earning their place on the 4 member US National Senior
Team. The team will represent the United States at the 2005 World Championships
in Leipzeig, Germany October 8-15.

Veteran's Team
OFA members Sherry Green and Ed Korfanty both win places
on the USA Veteran's team. They will represent the USA at the 2005 Veteran's
World Championships Sept. 2-4 in Tampa Florida. Congratulations to both!

NCAA Fencing Championship
Three OFA members helped propel Notre Dame to win the 2005 NCAA Fencing
Championship. Outstanding efforts by Valerie Providenza,
Mariel Zagunis, and Patrick Ghattas helped Notre Dame achieve a narrow
victory over rival Ohio State.

The event is being held March 17 through March 20.
2005 US National Cadet and Jr. Team
Congratulations to OFA's 2005 US National Team members who will
compete in Linz, Austria March 23-30, 2005 at the Cadet/Junior World
Championships!
Mariel Zagunis:
2004 Olympic GOLD medalist will compete in the Junior Women's Sabre
March 26th. She will also be part of the USA Junior Team competing on
March 29th. This is Mariel's 8th National Team. Mariel is currently a
freshman at the University of Notre Dame
Rebecca Ward: Will
compete in both the Cadet and junior individual events as well as the
team event. This is Becca's second year on the US National Team. She is
ranked # 1 in the US in Cadet (under age 17) Women's Sabre. She is also
expected to receive the FIE World Cup award this year for being the
highest ranked fencer on the international standings for the season.
Mera Keltner:
This is Mera's first US National Team appearance. She will compete in
the Cadet Women's Sabre on March 23rd. Mera is a junior at Jesuit High
School. Her best result of the season was a Silver medal at the Cadet
World Cup circuit event in Konin, Poland in September 2004.
Caitlin Thompson:
The 2004 Cadet World Champion, will compete for the US in the junior
team event on March 26th. Caity has made several Junior World Cup
finals this season including the Silver medal in Budapest and most
recently a Bronze medal at the Senior World Cup in Bangkok.
Patrick Ghattas:
This is Pat's third National Team. His best result is the Silver medal
in the Junior team at the 2003 World Championships. Patrick also earned
a Bronze medal in Sosnowiec, Poland Junior World Cup in October. He is
a Sophomore at the University of Notre Dame.
Ed Korfanty:
OFA head Coach and US National Team Coach for Women's Sabre, Mr
Korfanty is the designated women's coach for these World Championships.
Mr. Korfanty has coached the Oregon Fencing Alliance for more than 11
years and has successfuly had at least one student every year on the US
National Team. This is the first time OFA has placed 5 fencers on the
US National team. Mr Korfanty's students have won more World Champion
titles than any other club in the US.

of the Year award.

Fencing for University of Notre Dame, Valerie Providenza won the
2004 NCAA Women's Sabre Championship.

Olympic Gold Medalist, Women's Sabre
Mariel Zagunis won the first Olympic women’s saber competition Tuesday
night, beating former world champion Tan Xue of China 15-9. This
is the first
ever Olympic Gold Medal for USA women's fencing.
Congratulations to
Mariel Zagunis and her coach, Ed Korfanty, for her beautiful
victory at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.
2003 Coach of the
Year
Ed Korfanty has been named USFA Coach of the Year for 2003. This
is the second time Coach Korfanty has earned this recognition.
