Ian was introduced to fencing in an after-school program organized by Colleen Olney (mother of Michael and Robert Marx). She personally taught young Ian and soon thereafter Ed Korfanty moved to Portland and started to coach Ian along with Colleen.
Tall and slender, Ian's relaxed and laconic personality lulls one into a false perception, as when Ian steps onto the piste to compete his personality changes completely.
